A Wet Photo Hike – Many Surprises

As we prepared and planned for yesterday’s photo hike, the weather forecast ranged from cloudy with the possibility of rain to major rain. We fielded many questions about our plans, in case of rain. Jeri and I operate with the philosophy that photographers want to create quality photographs. And, some photographers are willing to ignore the damp and chill of a rainy day on the Oregon coast in order to find something special. In other words, once the hike is scheduled, we will have the hike. The photographers who made the hike were not disappointed. The rain created a landscape of saturated green with rich tones and soft light. The occasional salamander and the cow elk added to the experience.
Jeri and I always select a challenge for the day. We introduce the challenge (theme) to the participants during the pre-hike briefing. Yesterday the them was impact. Our photographers worked on creating images with impact. We discussed telling the story and guiding the viewer’s eye.
After a couple hours exploring the Villages Open Space, we went to our studio and discussed the morning’s photography. It was a great morning.

The Photo Hike Season is Underway!

Jeri Knudson, JAKS Photography Studio, and I have already led two groups of photographers on photo hikes this year. We explored and photographed the area around South 51st Street and Siletz Bay on the first hike. The weather and ocean cooperated with some great seascapes and interesting light. Saturday, April 16th we led more photographers to Drift Creek Falls. The trail is a series of photographs around every corner. The wildlife star was a spotted owl that gave us a series of poses. The next photo hike will be on Saturday, May 14th. We will be exploring The Villages open space on the north side of Lincoln City. Last year this area was a favorite, so we’re excited to get up there again. Registration is through the studio. The price is $20.00 per person.April_16,_2016DriftCreekFalls1778

An Evening of Event Photography at the 2016 Cork and Cuisine Gala

In Lincoln City, Oregon one of the sure signs of spring is the Annual Cork and Cuisine fundraiser, sponsored by Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital Foundation. Along with Jeri Knudson, JAKs Photography Studio, I have been the event photographer for a number of years. The community comes together, surrounded by great music, food and wine, to raise funds for our hospital. April 09, 2016WineGala1613

The staff and volunteers of the Hospital Foundation create a magical atmosphere at the Salishan Spa and Golf Resort. The dinner is followed by a spirited auction.April 09, 2016WineGala1640

Everyone has a great time. As event photographers, our job is to record the festivities while blending into the background.
